Zanzibar

Discover the tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean!

Extend your safari trip to Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a world of its own. The island has long been considered a place of longing. In fact, this popular island has not been part of what is now the country of Tanzania for very long. Tanzania is made up of the parts Tanganyika and Zanzibar, from which the current country name is derived. In Zanzibar, you find a uniquely diverse Swahili tradition that culminates from a mixture of Persian, Indian, Arab and East African coastal cultures blended-in by centuries of historical integration.

Activities in Zanzibar

Apart from the fantastic beaches, we have picked out a few activities for you in Zanzibar, although there is a much wider range to offer. You can also inquire about other things to do with our Zenith Tours team on site in Zanzibar at any time. The guides are available to you at any time.

Stone Town

A visit to Stone Town (1/2 day):
Stone Town is the oldest district of Zanzibar with many houses and buildings made of light coral stone. The city has many Arab influences. You are given a guided tour through the beautiful winding streets.

Cooking class

Cooking together with the Tanzanian mamas (three hours):
You will take a cooking course and learn about the variety of local spices, vegetables and regional ingredients. Together, with the help of Tanzanian mamas, you will prepare original Tanzanian dishes, which you can then enjoy yourself. Chakula Kizuri!

Spice farm

A visit to a spice farm (1/2 day):
For many years, Zanzibar was the only clove producer in the world. A visit to a spice plantation is worth it! You see cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, pepper, vanilla, etc., growing and being harvested. You can also taste a lot yourself.

Additionally, you can book a cooking class following your spice farm experience. In this course, you will work with the local women to incorporate the spices you have just learned about into traditional dishes.

Prison Island

Prison Island (1/2 day):
Take a trip to Prison Island with your private tour guide. You'll see the old prison that was built, never used as prison but instead as quarantine station for yellow fever, as Stown Town threatened a yellow fever epidemic which could have spilled over into all of East Africa. You have some time to explore the island's sandy beach, do a bit of snorkeling, and possibly meet the giant tortoises that live on the island.

Jozani Forest

Jozani Forest (1/2 day):
The Jozani Forest is one of the last remaining protected areas in the world with red colobus monkeys. With a private guide, you will enter the area where you will see huge trees, a mangrove forest and many medicinally useful plants. There are also many different species of butterflies and birds, chameleons and much more to discover.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling at Mnemba Island (1/2 day or full day):
Mnemba Island is located in the north-east off the coast of Zanzibar and is ideal for snorkeling. This tour can be extended as a day tour, with an additional lunchtime barbecue on a sandbank. You can observe countless colourful fish during the snorkeling tour, and you might even see dolphins!

Diving

Discover the fascinating underwater world of Zanzibar:
Our diving offer takes you to the stunning coral reefs and a variety of marine life including colourful fish, turtles and even dolphins. Our experienced diving guides will accompany you safely through the waters and show you the most beautiful diving spots on the island. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced diver, with us, you will find the right adventure to experience the beauty of the Indian Ocean in all its glory. Immerse yourself and experience Zanzibar from a whole new side!

Deep sea fishing

Deep sea fishing (1/2 or full day):
The fishing areas around the island groups of Zanzibar are home to numerous different fish that make the heart of every deep-sea angler beat faster. Almost all year round there are many good fishing grounds to pack your fishing rod and head out into the Indian Ocean. Quite a few vacationers report that almost nowhere have they experienced fish as willing and strong to fight as on Zanzibar!

Safari Blue

Sailing excursion:
The Safari Blue Experience offers a fascinating day trip on a traditional dhow sailboat. During the trip, you have the opportunity to snorkel in the colourful coral reefs and explore the diverse underwater world with its colourful fish. Enjoy a relaxing time on a sandbank where you can unwind with a refreshing swim before treating yourself to a delicious Swahili seafood lunch. Afterwards you can visit the mangroves and, with a bit of luck, even watch dolphins.

What makes Zanzibar so special?

Let us inspire you too!

Today, it is the exotic mix of tropical beaches, exotic markets, oriental flair and traces of an eventful history that make a stay on Zanzibar so enticing.

A wide variety of spices and fruits thrive on this tropical island. The name conjures up images of paradise on earth. The alleyways of Stone Town exude Arabian flair and goods are haggled over loudly at the market here and there.

Zanzibar will also undoubtedly impress you with its culinary delights, as Arabs, Indians and Europeans alike brought their culinary habits to the tropical island. The food is a colorful mixture of stews, curries and, of course, tasty fish dishes – and always with the addition of the many spices that thrive so abundantly on Zanzibar. While most safari guests focus on the large mammals on the Tanzanian mainland, Zanzibar is a fascinating island with a rich marine fauna, including bottlenose dolphins, humpback whales and sea turtles.
