Experience Tanzania up close

Locals will accompany you on your journey!

This trip shows you the wildlife in the less tourist-oriented national parks of Nyerere and Ruaha in Southern Tanzania. With your trip, you support the elephant corridors through the local beehive programme and accompany the rangers during their activities in Ruaha National Park. A hike with a ranger in Nyerere National Park is possible for participants 16 and up – a completely different kind of safari!

Nyerere National Park is best visited between June and February. At the Usangu Expedition Camp (open from June 1 to January 3) you can actively support the rangers in their work (positioning camera traps, analysing data, and following lions equipped with a sensor – prices on request). This way you can experience a safari in a completely different way! Children above age 12 are very welcome at Usangu Expedition Camp.

Detailed travel schedule

Day 1:

You will be picked up from the airport at Dar es Salaam and transferred to your hotel. Here you can relax from your long flight. Overnight stay at Serena Hotel, Dar es Salaam (****).

Additional activities:

(Prices on request! Please specify the desired activities when requesting a quote):

  • City tour of Dar es Salaam (2 hours)

Day 2:

After breakfast, your hotel guide will take you back to the airport, from where you will fly in about an hour to Matambwe Airstrip in Nyerere National Park. There you will be picked up by your private guide, who will be at your side for the entire trip, and transported to Lemara Eco Camp (approximately 20 minutes). Once at your lodge, you will enjoy a delicious lunch before visiting the beehive elephant corridor support programme at Kisaki to set up your own beehive. Overnight stay at Lemara Eco Camp (***).

The beehive fence at Kisaki – to protect the elephant corridors – is 2.4 kilometres long, of which 1.2 kilometres have already been completed. Two hundred bee boxes are still missing! Booking this trip supports this project of the Tanzania Elephant Foundation.

Day 3:

Today you will take a bike tour to a hot spring, followed by a visit to Kisaki Village. There is a market at Kisaki Village every Tuesday. Overnight stay at Lemara Eco Camp (***).

Additional activities:

(Prices on request! Please specify the desired activities when requesting a quote):

  • Additionally, or as an alternative, you can also go on a hike and learn about medicinal plants. A Maasai will show you the plants in nature and explain what they are used for.

Day 4:

After breakfast, you will set off for Nyerere National Park, where you will spend the day exploring the surrounding area in a safari jeep with your private guide. In the afternoon you will reach Rufiji River Camp. Your lodge is located right on the riverside, so you have the chance to spot wildlife right from your lodge. Overnight stay at Rufiji River Camp (****) or Impala Camp (****).

Day 5:

Today you will take a boat trip on the Rufiji River. If the water level is too low, you will be transported to one of the nearby lakes. A boat safari is another way to see wildlife. You are very likely to see impalas, waterbucks, kudus, warthogs and – if you are lucky – elephants bathing in the river. Your guide will dock the boat at a spot at the lake side, so you can enjoy a picnic lunch. Overnight stay at Rufiji River Camp (****) or Impala Camp (****).

Rufiji River Camp is part of the Foxes Community and Wildlife Conservation Trust, a foundation that supports medical, educational, social and child protection projects. Rufiji River Camp is committed to the protection and sustainable development of natural reserves and has, for example, planted 6,000 trees.

Day 6:

After breakfast you will be transported to Mtemere Airstrip (10 minutes from the lodge). From Mtemere you fly to Ruaha National Park. You will be picked up by your guide as soon as you land in Ruaha National Park and taken to the Usangu Expedition Camp. Upon arrival, you will be given a wildlife camera, which you can place in front of your tent. On your last day, you can check what the camera has captured. Overnight stay at Usangu Expedition Camp (****) (February – April closed due to heavy rain).

Day 7:

Today you will visit the Douglas Bell Eco Research Station and receive on-site information about wildlife conservation and work in the Usangu Delta area. Overnight stay at Usangu Expedition Camp (****).

The Douglas Bell Eco Research Station is a central point for all conservation measures in the Usangu Delta area. Located close to Usangu Expedition Camp, guests have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the conservation efforts that rely on the work of rangers and researchers on site.

Day 8:

This morning you will explore the Usangu Delta area with a special boat. This boat is specially equipped for this wetland area, so that the area can be navigated at both high and low water levels. Elephants are often spotted in the wetland, and the bird life is fantastic. In the afternoon you have a game drive through Ruaha National Park. Overnight stay at Ruaha River Lodge (****).

Day 9:

In the early morning you will go on a hike with a ranger (minimum two people). Walking through the African bush, you experience a completely different perspective, as you no longer hear the noise of the jeep, you are immersed in nature and closer to the ground, which means you see much more detail. This is a completely different way of experiencing the African bush with heightened senses. In the afternoon you have another game drive. Overnight stay at Ruaha River Lodge (****).

Additional activities:

(Prices on request! Please specify the desired activities when requesting a quote):

  • A hot air balloon ride over the vastness of Ruaha National Park

Day 10:

After breakfast you will be picked up and taken to Msembe Airstrip (30-40 minutes from the lodge), from where you will fly back to Dar es Salaam. From here you can fly home, or you can fly further to Zanzibar and extend your holiday.

We can extend your trip with an offer to Zanzibar. There are several beautiful eco-lodges/hotels in Zanzibar, such as Sunshine Marine Lodge (****) and the Chumbe Island eco-lodge (*****). Your booking on Chumbe Island directly supports the preservation of the local ecosystem and local educational projects. We look forward to hearing from you!
