Detailed travel schedule

Day 1:

You will be picked up from Kilimanjaro Airport and driven to your first lodge. Here you can relax from your trip and enjoy the Tanzanian atmosphere. Would you like additional interesting tours in the afternoon or early morning? Please also take a look at the list of other additional activities that you can do. Overnight stay at Mount Meru Game Lodge (***) or Onsea House (****).

Mount Meru Game Lodge is one of the oldest lodges in Tanzania. It was purchased in 1959 by Dr Andreas Von Nagy. He was a passionate animal lover and quickly turned his house into an orphanage for animals. He eventually founded the Mount Meru Game Reserve to protect wildlife in the Mount Meru area. This area is now part of Arusha National Park. Together with the government, he founded the Wildlife College. Students are trained there in dealing with wild animals. His passion for wildlife became known worldwide, rooms were added, and the current lodge was created. After Dr. Von Nagy retired in 1980, no more animals were taken in. Mount Meru Game Lodge is still family-owned today.

Day 2:

In the morning, after a delicious breakfast, you will meet your private guide. He will discuss your programme with you. Afterwards you will visit Arusha National Park. First, you will explore the park on foot with a ranger (approximately two hours). You'll see buffalo and giraffes up close, and you will have beautiful views of Mount Meru. In the afternoon you will take a drive through the national park, where – with a bit of luck – you will also see the colobus monkeys. Overnight stay at Mount Meru Game Lodge (***) or Onsea House (****).

Additional activities:

(Prices on request! Please note that some activities require an additional overnight stay):

  • A city tour of Arusha (approx. 2 hours)
  • A hike to the Napuru waterfall: Hike through a beautiful rainforest at the foot of Mount Meru to a stunning waterfall. You will discover monkeys, extraordinary birds, chameleons and many butterflies (approx. 2 hours)
  • By canoe on Lake Duluti or Lake Momella, Arusha National Park (2.5 hours): On the water in a canoe there are many extraordinary birds to discover, such as kingfishers, ospreys, hundreds of cattle egrets, the snake bird, flamingos and many more.
  • Hiking tours up to Mount Meru (one day or 3-4 days with porters)

Please specify the additional activities you would like when requesting a quote!

Day 3:

After breakfast, you will drive for about two hours to a village where you will cook original Tanzanian dishes with the Tanzanian mamas. You will then be able to enjoy these dishes yourself. Afterwards you will drive to the Africa Amini Life Lodge, where you will stay overnight in a real Maasai lodge! The Africa Amini Life Lodge has a fantastic view of both Mount Meru (4,566 m) and Kilimanjaro (5,895 m). In the afternoon you can choose from various activities. For example, you can visit the school and the hospital or go on a hike. There you learn a lot about medicinal plants. For the children there is a tour on donkeys, or you can learn how to make healthy tea. Overnight stay at Eco-Lodge Africa Amini Life Lodge.

All overnight stays at the Eco-Lodge Africa Amini Life Lodge actively support social and medical education projects of the Africa Amini Alama Foundation.

Day 4:

Today is a special Maasai day, an experience you will not forget! You will wake up early in the morning, be dressed like a Maasai, and be taken to the Maasai village near the lodge to milk goats and cows. After a late breakfast, the men will collect medicinal plants, slaughter a goat and build a fire. The women will look for firewood, repair Maasai houses and support the Maasai women in their work. At the end of the day, you will all sit around the campfire with the Maasai, enjoy the goat meat and dance. Throughout the day you will be accompanied by one of the Maasai guides who will explain to you the deeper meaning of Maasai life. Overnight stay at Eco-Lodge Africa Amini Life Lodge.

Day 5:

After breakfast, you will drive to Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge (2.5 hrs), where you can enjoy a hot lunch. In the afternoon you will visit a large coffee plantation on a two-hour tour. There you will learn everything about the different steps in the process from coffee bean to coffee, and of course you can also taste the different types of coffee. Overnight stay at Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge (****).

Day 6:

Today you will get an insight into Tanzanian culture with the Marangu cultural tour. You will be picked up after breakfast and driven to the Marangu village. There we start the tour by going to a waterfall. Afterwards you will visit the Chagga Museum where you will learn more about the Chagga tribe. You'll also visit the underground Chagga Tunnels and a local market in Marangu. Overnight stay at Marangu Hotel (***).

Day 7:

You don't have to go to the top of Kilimanjaro, but you can take a day hike to Mandara Hut. After an early start in the morning, hike through the Mandara rainforest up to the Mandara Hut (3-4 hours) at 2720 m altitude. From there you have a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro. You can enjoy your lunch at the Mandara Hut. In the afternoon we go back down (2-3 hours). Overnight stay at Marangu Hotel (***).

Additional activities:

(Prices on request! Book one of our programmes where this option is possible.)

  • 6-8 day tour up to Kilimanjaro

Day 8:

Today after breakfast you will drive to Mkomazi National Park (approximately 3 hours). On the way we will stop at the bee project to protect the elephant corridors, where you can hang your own beehive! In the afternoon you will go on a game drive in the national park. From the lodge you have a beautiful view of a waterhole, so there is a good chance that animals will come there. At night you may hear the lions roaring, and during the day – if you are lucky – you may see rhinos or large groups of elephants. Overnight stay at Mkomazi Wilderness Retreat (****).

Mkomazi National Park is a 3,245 square kilometre national park known for its black rhinos, although the "Big Five" are also not missing in this park. The park is less tourist-oriented. There are over 400 special bird species here, and it is a corridor for many herds of elephants that migrate south from Tsavo National Park in Kenya to Mkomazi National Park during the dry season.
