A photo safari workshop:

The birthing season in the Ndutu area, in the south of the Serengeti!

Do you have sufficient basic knowledge of digital photography (with a hybrid or reflex camera) and would you like to expand your photographic skills and have breathtaking motifs in front of your lens? We offer you a special photo safari workshop in the middle of the African wilderness. The entire safari tour will focus on photography concepts, angles, techniques, lighting, and photographic opportunities. All of this takes place in the middle of the Ndutu area, south of the Serengeti, where there is an incredible number of special interactions between animal and landscape objects as well as extraordinary incidences of light.

An expert photographer will accompany you on this journey and provide you with advice and tips to help you improve your photography skills. Our photographer, together with our experienced guides, will take you to extraordinary animal situations in the African wilderness. Of course, encounters with animals in the African wilderness cannot be planned, but we offer photo safari workshops at very special locations:

  • The birthing season: end of January / beginning of February 2025 in the Ndutu area, south of the Serengeti
  • The world-famous river crossing: August / September 2025 in the north of the Serengeti

Every day the pictures you take are looked at, revised, and improved together with the photographer, so that you can use what you have learned again the next day.

What you need to know about the photo safari workshop:

The Ndutu region

The Ndutu region is part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and extends to the southern part of the Serengeti National Park. There is plenty of local wildlife to see here all year round, including elephants, hyenas, giraffes, and big cats. The best view point for game viewing is Lake Ndutu, where huge herds gather. It is a shallow alkaline lake located on the eastern border of Serengeti National Park. Lake Ndutu serves as a water source for the animals and shares the same source as Lake Masek, which is located a short distance to the east. The forests and granite kopjes around Lake Ndutu are also home to plenty of wildlife outside of the migration months. In the Ndutu area it is allowed to drive off-road, which is ideal for a photo safari workshop.

Date photo workshop:

– Ndutu Birthing Season Photo Safari 2025: Register by 31 August 2024

  • Course 1) 01/25/2025 – 02/01/2025 (6 spots still available)
  • Course 2) 02/02/2025 – 02/09/2025 (6 spots still available)

– River Crossing Photo Safari 2025: exact date and programme will follow.

Language of the workshop:

The workshop will be held in either German, French or English.

Maximum number of guests per photo safari workshop:

We would like to limit the photo safari workshops to a maximum of six participants per workshop, distributed across two safari jeeps (three participants per jeep). You’ll each have a seat by the window, and enough space to store all your gear and keep it within easy reach. Would you like a private photo safari? This is also possible, although the costs are correspondingly higher.

Daily routine:

When you arrive, you start with the photography workshop, in which you go through the settings and possibilities of your photo device. Afterwards you will fly to the south of the Serengeti in a small plane. There you will go on a safari tour in the morning and late afternoon, and during the trip you will be given instructions on how best to photograph the animal objects. After lunch, you will work on your photos as a group and learn further photography skills. You can then put these newly acquired skills directly to use in the evening.

Photo material requirements:

You will take photos during the course with your own camera and additional photo material. We provide you with a list of everything else you should take with you. We will organize bean bags for you to stabilize your camera device.

Who is this photo safari workshop suitable for?

You have sufficient basic knowledge of digital photography and are familiar with your camera (hybrid or reflex). Would you like to expand your photography knowledge? Then we are the right choice!

Your wildlife photographer:

Mr. Laurent Wanner will accompany you during this workshop in German and French. For the English-language workshop, you will be accompanied by professional photographer Denis.

You can find more information about Mr. Wanner on his Facebook page:

Our safari jeeps:

Our safari jeeps are especially suitable for photo safaris. We have 8-seaters (two seats in the front and six seats in the back) with a pop-up roof and sliding windows so you can use your bean bag to support your camera equipment. We prefer a maximum of three guests per jeep so that there is a seat next to each person for the photo equipment. The professional photographer will sit in the front next to the driver and guide.

Programme proposal:

The largest wave of births occurs in the south of the Serengeti in the last week of January and the first week of February. Millions of wildebeest give birth there. About 8,000 calves are born every day. Your photography workshop will take place in the middle of this incredible event!

Day 1:

You will be picked up by us from Kilimanjaro Airport and taken to your lodge. You can rest there after your long journey. If you would like to spend a few days in Zanzibar after your photo workshop, we can temporarily store your luggage. In the afternoon or early evening, you will meet your photographer and get to know the rest of your group. Your photographer will conduct an initial photography workshop with you. Overnight stay at Arusha Coffee Lodge (****).

Day 2:

You will be picked up from the lodge early in the morning and taken to Arusha airport. There you fly directly to the south of the Serengeti (Arusha -Ndutu Airstrip, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.). After landing you will be driven to your lodge where you will have lunch. Your lodge is close to Lake Masek, so the chances of spotting wildlife are very good. From around 4 p.m. the first safari tour and a safari photography workshop will take place in the middle of the wilderness. Overnight stay at Lake Masek Tented Camp (****).

The eco-friendly Lake Masek Tented Camp is, as the name suggests, located at the border of Lake Masek. The camp was built using biodegradable materials, runs on solar energy and collects water during rainfall. The accommodation spares no effort to offer its guests first-class comfort without harming the environment. The main camp building has a cosy lounge, a restaurant and a large viewing terrace overlooking the lake. Every evening, guests can enjoy a drink around the campfire while watching the beautiful African sunset.

Day 3:

You will get up early in the morning (6:00 a.m.) and start the safari workshop. At midday you will be able to enjoy a warm lunch, after which you will optimize your images in the group after lunch from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., accompanied by your photographer. In the late afternoon, from around 4 p.m. onward, you will go on safari again, where you can put into practice what you have learned. After dinner you can also edit your pictures again. Overnight stay at Lake Masek Tented Camp (****).

Day 4:

Today you will also get up very early in the morning (6:00 a.m.) and start the safari workshop. At midday you will enjoy a warm lunch, after which you will optimize your images in a group at lunchtime under the guidance of your photographer. In the late afternoon you will head to your next lodge, where you will go on another photo safari. After dinner you can also edit your pictures again. Overnight stay at Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge (****).

Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge blends beautifully into its natural surroundings with acacia trees and a beautiful view of Lake Ndutu. All-natural vegetation has been preserved and wildlife can move freely through the camp site. Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge is an eco-friendly lodge using solar energy as its electricity source.

Day 5:

You will go on safari tour again early in the morning. At midday you will enjoy a warm lunch, after which you will optimize your images as a group, accompanied by your photographer. In the late afternoon you will be out and about again, where you can put into practice what you have learned. After dinner you can also edit your pictures again. Overnight stay at Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge (****).

Day 6:

In the early morning, we go on safari again. At midday you will enjoy a warm lunch, after which you will optimize your images in a group at lunchtime, accompanied by your photographer. In the late afternoon you will be out and about again, where you can immediately implement what you have learned. After dinner you can also edit your pictures again. Overnight stay at Lake Ndutu Luxury Tented Lodge (****).

Day 7:

After breakfast you will be transferred to Ndutu Airstrip (15 minutes), from where you will fly back to Arusha (11:30 a.m. – 12:20 p.m.). From there you can either continue directly to Zanzibar, or you can spend the night in your lodge and then fly back home the next day. Overnight stay in Arusha Coffee Lodge (****).

Would you like to continue your trip to Zanzibar? There are several eco-lodges in Zanzibar, such as Sunshine Marine Lodge (****) and the Chumbe Island eco-lodge (*****). Your booking directly supports the preservation of the ecosystem and educational projects on site. We look forward to hearing from you!
