Food and drinks during your safari

Discover here which foods and beverages you can enjoy without hesitation!

Food

As a general rule, stick to cooked and peeled foods. Be careful with fresh salads, as uncooked ingredients can sometimes cause diarrhea—it’s better to remain on the save side. Meat and fish should always be cooked thoroughly.

Look forward to delicious local specialties! Try, for example, ugali (a corn porridge that is a staple food), nyama choma (grilled meat), chapati (a thin flatbread), or samaki (fish). You can order these dishes in many restaurants and discover the regional cuisine. The lodges usually offer European food, and the quality is generally excellent – so you can eat without hesitation.

Drinking

You should avoid tap water during your trip – even for brushing your teeth. Bottled water is available everywhere, whether in lodges, safari camps, or restaurants. While traveling in the safari jeep, you will also be provided with coffee, tea, snacks, mineral water, and soft drinks. And if you fancy something special, you can of course order wine, beer, or other alcoholic beverages in the lodges.

Safety tips

  • Do not drink tap water.
  • Avoid uncooked food, except for peeled or cooked fruit.
  • Just in case: pack diarrhea tablets in your luggage.
