Your cash on safari
How much cash should you ideally take with you on a safari trip?
You can often pay by credit card at lodges. Nevertheless, we advise you to take small change with you for tips and souvenirs – either in euros or US dollars (only dollar bills from 2009 onwards are accepted). Please note that you should always ask for a receipt when purchasing souvenirs. You will often need to present this to the airline so that the value of the item purchased can be verified.
In the lodges, you can either give small tips (e.g., $1 for your porters) or place a tip in the tip box provided at the end of your stay. You are completely free to decide how much you wish to tip and are under no obligation to do so.
At the end of your safari trip, before you either continue on to Zanzibar or fly back home, it is customary to tip your guide. Your guide will do their best to show you as much as possible and respond to your requests. A guideline is around $20 per day. The amount is, of course, entirely up to you: if you are very satisfied, you are welcome to give more – you are also free to give less.
